North American Chamaecyparis Species Accounts

CEDARS (IN PART) (CHAMAECYPARIS)

The number of species of Chamaecyparis is not universally agreed upon because of confusion with the genus Cupressus. Three species are currently recognized in North America, two in western North America and a single species in the coastal swamps of eastern North America. The genus is superficially very similar to Cupressus, but the female cones of Chamaecyparis are universally smaller and the foliage is more flattened.

Species of Chamaecyparis are widely planted as ornamentals.

Characteristic Features:

Cones small (less than 0.5 inches in diameter), round, woody, consisting of a number of polygonal plates; foliage on flattened branchlets.
