North American Incense Cedar Species Accounts

INCENSE CEDAR (CALOCEDRUS)

The genus Calocedrus contains 3 species, one from the Pacific Coast of North America and 2 from China, Burma, and Taiwan. The North American species has historically been placed in Libocedrus, but Libocedrus has recently been restricted to some Old World Species.

Incense Cedar of North America is a very aromatic tree and an important lumber species. The wood is widely used for cedar chests and closests. The wood is also in the manufacture of pencils because its is soft, but not given to splinters.

Characteristic Features:

The scales are elongate and arranged in 4 rows in a very distinctive pattern.


The foliage is flattened. The female cones are woody when mature and contain 6 cone scales.
