Polaris Frittilary (Boloria polaris [Boisduval]) Wing span: 1 3/16 - 1 1/2 inches (3.1 - 3.8 cm). Identification: Upperside orange brown heavily marked with black. Underside of hindwing with frosted white appearance. White marginal slashes extending outward from submarginal dark triangles and postmedian black spots surrounded with white. Life history: Not reported. Flight: Late June-July in most of range, mid August in Labrador. Caterpillar hosts: Mountain Avens and probably also blueberry (Vaccinium uliginosum). Habitat: Tundra ridges or flat areas below hill or mountain summits. Range: Holarctic. Tundra region of Alaska, northern Canada including arctic islands, extending south into northern British Columbia, Labrador, and northeastern Greenland. |
